Wine Tasting Experiences!

One way to become more knowledgeable about wine and have a good time doing it is to attend wine tasting events.  Local restaurants, wine stores and wineries usually have quite a list of on-going tasting events.  Search them out via the Internet or local newspaper.

Typically a winemaker, wine representative, or sommelier conducts the tasting.  They provide an intimate environment to be educated on the wine, its nuances, and philosophy of the winemaker.  It also allows you the opportunity to ask questions and give them your feedback about the wine.  The amount of wines offered is usually 4-6 types. Wine flight portions are usually 2-3 oz. pours.  You have the option to drink the wine or to dispose of it in a dump bucket prior to moving on to the next wine.

There are several different types of tastings.  Examples are vertical and horizontal tastings.  A vertical tasting is one where one varietal (i.e. Pinot Noir) is featured from the same vineyard but with different vintages.  A horizontal tasting is where one varietal from different winemakers is featured from a single vintage.  Wine makers and reps usually feature flights from their portfolios to generate interest in their wines.  Usually at the events, the featured wines are offered at special pricing the date of the event.

Other examples of wine tastings are the combination events such as wine pairing dinners, gourmet cheese and wine, and gourmet chocolate and wine.  Wine tastings tend to be a very cost effective way of experiencing different and unique wines
